Microbial Identification

The sequences of 16S rDNA and ITS (internal transcribed spacer) have been widely used and internationally accepted for genus and species identification of bacteria and fungi. The 16S rDNA sequencing targets a highly conserved region in bacterial genomes, allowing for precise identification of bacterial species. For fungi, the ITS region is commonly sequenced, providing detailed species-level identification. These methods are highly accurate, offering the advantage of identifying microorganisms and can be used for both known and novel species, making them essential tools in microbial taxonomy and diagnostics. A&L offers routine identification of bacteria, yeasts, and molds from the pure cultures by DNA sequencing. We take either pure culture or food samples to isolate the microbials for identification of the major species of bacteria or molds in the sample by DNA sequencing.

Microbial Community Analysis

Microbial community analysis by Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) is a powerful technique used to study the composition and diversity of microbial populations in a given sample. NGS allows for high-throughput sequencing of genetic material, typically targeting specific regions like the 16S rRNA gene for bacteria or ITS for fungi, without the need for culturing. This approach provides a comprehensive view of microbial communities, revealing both abundant and rare species, and enables the detection of complex interactions within the microbiome. NGS is widely used in environmental, clinical, and food safety applications to gain deeper insights into microbial ecosystems.

Shelf Life Testing

Food microbial shelf life testing evaluates the safety and quality of food products over time by monitoring microbial growth and contamination. Our expertise can work with you to develop a scientifically sound sampling and testing protocol. We can also spike the product with specific bacteria and monitor its growth to evaluate the product’s stability.
