Frequently Asked Questions

  • SOIL sample – take 10 to 20 sample cores or scoops from a depth of 0-6 inches and mix it in a bucket. Mix thoroughly to get a representative sample and take your sample from there. Sometimes different depths are needed please consult your Local A&L Representative
  • Nematodes in SOIL – take samples from 20 -25 locations at a depth of 3-18 inches. Mix samples and place 2 cups in a bag. Label bag clearly with nematode analysis as the nematode test and normal soil test have different lab preparation. Nematodes soils cannot dry out.
  • COMPOST sample – since compost is heterogeneous take several samples using sterile equipment and mix. Provide 2 liters of material from the representative sample. Depending on the size of the pile different numbers of subsamples are needed.
  • TISSUE sample – about 2 cups of leaves or a large paper bag. Most analyses require 2 grams of dried ground tissue. Depending on the crop and stage the most recently matured leaves are best to collect. Other times the 1/3 of the plant OR the petioles are needed.
  • FEED sample about 2 litres or a large freezer bag.
  • MANURE sample about 1 cup in a FLEXIBLE plastic bottle. Dried manure take 3 samples and mix together. Liquid manure pours from the unloading port and fills the flexible container 25% full. Note if the sample cannot be sent to the lab within 4 hours refrigerate sample.

  • SOIL sample about 2 cups or a sandwich bag.
  • COMPOST sample about 2 litres or a large freezer bag.
  • TISSUE sample about 2 cups of leaves or a large paper bag. Most analysis require 2 grams of dried ground tissue.
  • FEED sample about 2 litres or a large freezer bag.
  • WATER sample about 1 cup.
  • FERTILIZER sample about 1 cup.
  • MANURE sample about 1 cup.
  • SOIL sample – we have small soil bags that have a fill line so you know you have enough sample. You can also use plastic sandwich bags. Plastic is best in case there is any moisture in the sample.
  • COMPOST sample – we have large plastic bags that zipper closed or you can use a large freezer bag. Two freezer bags are recommended if you have selected multiple analyses.
  • TISSUE sample about 2 cups of leaves or a large paper bag. We have small and large paper bags however any paper bag is acceptable. Please only use paper to store tissue samples otherwise samples decompose and analysis can be inaccurate.
  • FEED sample about 2 litres or a large freezer bag.
  • WATER sample about 1 cup. We have plastic containers for water samples although a clean water bottle will do. Please ensure the container is cleaned thoroughly otherwise there can be contamination.
  • FERTILIZER sample about 1 cup. A plastic container similar to the water sample container can be used for a liquid sample. If the product is dry (granular or powder) a plastic bag like a sandwich bag will work.
  • MANURE sample about 1 cup. Please use a flexible hard container or double bagged in a resealable bag.

Soils can be left to air dry unless you are sampling for nematodes. Nematode soils should be moist. Tissues should not be stored in a sealed container and never frozen. Dried Tissue is recommended. Composts or manures ship in a cooler with ice packs is recommended to reduce pathogen growth during transport. Manures can expand in sealed containers which can cause spills and contamination.

For all samples please label all bags and containers with grower information and sample ID. Paperwork should be included in all samples. Submission paperwork can be found on our website [link] Samples can be dropped off anytime the lab is open Monday to Friday 8 am to 5 pm and in the sample shed located on the between buildings.

  • SOIL samples are completed within 3 business days
  • COMPOST sample can be 10 days or longer depending on analysis
  • TISSUE sample is completed in 1 business day
  • FEED sample –
  • WATER sample – 1 business day
  • FERTILIZER sample – 5 to 7 business days
  • MANURE sample – 5 business days
